Former Cowboys standout Nate Newton down 133 pounds since weight-loss surgery

Once every week, Nate Newton weighs in at the Live Life Again bariatric surgery center in Colleyville.

He arrives in style on a jet black, Can-Am Spyder three-wheeler, chillin' to some mellow music, eager to track his progress and see himself grow smaller.

At age 48, Newton's life has changed in a big way.

He has lost -- are you ready for this? -- 133 pounds in a little more than three months.

Now when Big Nate drops by a local restaurant... no one recognizes him because he has gone from 396 pounds in mid-April to 263 pounds on his most recent weigh-in.

"I was going to be either big, fat and happy or smaller, healthier and happy. Either way, I was going to be happy," said Newton, a six-time Pro Bowler who played left guard on all three Cowboys Super Bowl teams of the '90s.

The heaviest the 6-foot-3 Newton weighed was 411 pounds near the end of his career in Dallas in 1998.

"It can really get on top of you," said Newton, who now has a 40-inch waist. It used to be 56 inches.

"Nate is a courageous individual. He has far exceeded expectations within the time frame, reducing his BMI [body mass index] from 50 when we went to surgery to 33 now," said Dr. David Kim, who performed the bariatric procedure April 19.

It's called a "gastric sleeve," in which Newton's stomach capacity was drastically reduced.
