Grant Teaff: Singletary has gone back to basics
Mike Singletary hasn't sought counsel from previous coaches like Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan. He's simply called down to Waco.
Legendary Baylor coach Grant Teaff said he talks frequently with Singletary, and they even spoke already this week. Teaff said they have kept a close relationship over the years, and as Baylor fans know, Teaff wanted Singletary to get the job when Guy Morriss was fired.
How has Singletary turned the 49ers from a bumbling group into a scrappy team? He started with fundamentals like blocking, tackling and getting people to play within the team concept.
"That's the first thing that Mike had to master was they had to do the little things right first," Teaff said. "The incident with the youngster [Vernon Davis] that got the penalty, and Mike sent him to the showers, that was a great lesson for that young man, but that was a great lesson to his team. You do things outside of the team, you're not a part of the team. That's fundamental."
This video pretty much sums it all up. This is Singletary's post-game news conference after the Seattle game where he sent Davis to the locker room. The following day, news broke that Singletary pulled down his pants during halftime to inform the players they were playing like...well, you can figure it out.
Fast forward to the 1:00 mark, the 1:41 mark, 2:15, 2:30...well, you can figure it out.
