DeMarcus Ware second in Defensive Player of Year vote

BY MAC ENGEL

Dallas Cowboys’ Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware, whose 20 sacks this season rank sixth in NFL history, finished second Monday to Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison in voting for The Associated Press 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Harrison received 22 votes. Ware got 13, and Baltimore safety Ed Reed was third with eight.

Ware’s 20 sacks were also the second-most in club history behind Harvey Martin’s 23 in 1977, before sacks were an official statistic.

Ware also had 110 tackles, third-best on the team, eight tackles for loss, 20 quarterback pressures and a fumble recovery. The Cowboys ranked eighth in the NFL in total defense, 20th in points allowed and fifth in pass defense.

Harrison finished with 16 sacks. The Steelers led the NFL in total defense, pass defense and fewest points allowed.

Ware is also one of five finalists for the 2008 GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Year award. The others are Harrison, Reed, Miami linebacker Joey Porter and Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The award is decided by fan votes.

Two former Cowboys have been honored with similar defensive honors. Martin was named the Defensive Player of the Year by United Press International and Pro Football Weekly in 1977. Charles Haley took the same honor presented by Football Digest in 1994.

Garrett interview

Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is scheduled to interview for the vacant head coaching position in Denver today with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

Bowlen already has interviewed Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who was recently promoted. Broncos defensive coordinator Rick Dennison is also scheduled to interview for the position.

It will be Garrett’s first interview this off-season. The Lions contacted the Cowboys about Garrett for their head coaching job, but he has not interviewed with them.

The St. Louis Rams are also interested in talking to Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman about their head coaching position.

Amendola joins Eagles

Practice squad wide receiver Danny Amendola is leaving the Cowboys for the Eagles.

Amendola reached an agreement to join Philadelphia’s practice squad for the remainder of the playoffs.

Amendola, a former Texas Tech star, is committed to the Eagles only through the rest of this season, unless they activate him to the playoff roster. In that case, the Eagles would have exclusive rights to him in 2009. The Cowboys attempted to re-sign Amendola, but he wanted to explore his options.

Back to San Antonio

The Cowboys are expected to go to San Antonio for training camp July 30 and begin practice there July 31, according to officials at the Alamodome.

The Cowboys will train in San Antonio until Aug. 22.

However, if the Cowboys add a fifth preseason game, which is being discussed (possibly the Hall of Fame game), everything would be pushed up one week.
